5 Walks I’d Like to Take Around the World

Over the past couple of weeks, Boston has been hammered by a series of snowstorms, and that means I’ve been virtually unable to leave my house. I’ve always loved walking, jogging, and hiking, and I’m sad that the freezing cold and the pandemic are making it harder to get outside. One of the negative effects of this pandemic winter is that many people are moving less, so I know I’m not alone.

While I’m cooped up inside, relying on home working videos, I’ve been dreaming of the day I can take long walks and embark on serious hikes abroad. I hope that this list of my “dream hiking destinations” reminds you that there will be adventure and fresh air waiting for us in the future!

1. The Wales Coast Path

Covering an impressive 870 miles, this remarkable path is known as the first footpath in the world to occupy the entire coastline of a country. Picture miles and miles of unspoiled walking terrain—like the Appalachian Trail, but easier and with incredible ocean views along the way! Some popular stops along the path include Cardiff Bay, the historic island of Ynys Llanddwyn (don’t ask me to pronounce that), and the Lavernock Nature Reserve.

2. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand

I hiked the Tongariro Crossing with the most incredible group of people!

I actually had the privilege of hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on my gap year, but it’s such a magical place that I’m itching to return and relive my hike all over again! Located in New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park, the oldest park in the country, this 12-mile hike is an adventure though a volcanic landscape with some of the most vibrant bodies of water I’ve ever seen. The hike is a challenge, but a challenge with a very memorable reward. When you’re gazing down at the emerald lakes and the mountains all around you, you’ll forget all about being tired.

Plus, did you know that you’ll be walking right by “Mount Doom” from The Lord of the Rings? Also known as Mount Ngaruhoe, this is the famous lair of Sauron from the films.

3. The Yoshida Trail, Mount Fuji, Japan

After all the images I’ve seen of the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji rising majestically from a layer of fog, I just have to add this adventure to my list. Climbing up Mount Fuji while admiring some of the most unique wildflowers in the world sounds like a dream come true (and yes, I do identify as a flower enthusiast). The Yoshida Trail is around 11.6 miles, but there are 3 other hiking options that also lead to the summit of Mt. Fuji, including the significantly less crowded Gotemba Trail.

4. Lac de Tueda walk, French Alps

Picturesque mountain views…lakeside relaxing…country cottages…quaint cafés…yes, I’m sold. I really can’t think of anything better than romping about in a wonderland like this one. In the summertime, the lush greenery of the alps is unforgettable, and there are a variety of walking options available in the Alps more generally for people of all different ability levels. Paris sounds great, but this sounds even better.

5. Copacabana Beach Promenade, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

While I particularly enjoy quiet walks out in nature, there’s always a part of me that craves harbor walks in bustling port cities, and this one definitely fits the bill. It’s a shorter walk—just 4 kilometers—but it involves gliding along 4 kilometers of a funky mosaic designed by architect Roberto Burle Marx. Plus, there are dozens of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs you can stop at along the way. Exercise, delicious food, and dance parties combined? Yes, please!

What are some walks you’re dreaming of taking while we’re stuck indoors? Let me know in the comments!

Number 4 looks the best, though Fiji would be awesome too!

      Fiji would be cool 💙

  2. Wanders The World

The Wales Coast Trail is in my list 🙂. For a different type of walk, I’d suggest Spain’s Camino de Santiago. There are several routes to choose from and it can be an incredible experience. Hopefully it will open up again. Happy walking.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I’ve always wanted to visit Spain too.
